Abstract

Effect of boxing competition on S100-B, CRP and leukocytes levels in elite boxers
Purpose: Combat sports are associated event with a possible head injury and brain damage and the incidence
of concussion and head injuries in boxing than any other sport but, examining this problem with reliable blood
markers not. The purpose of this study was to investigate effect of boxing on changes of S100-B, CRP and
leukocytes in boxer of Iran national team. Methods: For this reason, 10 players of elite boxer and 10 nonathlete
targeted and available in selected to two experimental (n=10) and control (n=10) groups. Blood sample
were taken in before, immediately after and 24 hours after boxing match for assessment of S-100B, CRP and
leukocyte .Data were analyzed using by mean and standard deviation for statistical description, and analysis of
variance with repeated measures test and Moncova test for inferential analysis of data) P≤0.05. (In case of
significant results of bonferroni post hoc test were used to compare mean variables in each group separately in
three stages. Statistical significant was set at P≤ 0.05. Results: The result showed that boxing competition
significantly increase levels of S100-B, CRP and leukocytes immediately after a boxing match P=0.000. Also,
boxing competition significantly increase levels of S100-B, CRP and leukocytes in boxers P=0.001. No
significant change were observed 24 hours after exercise P=0.7. S100-B, CRP and leukocytes showed a
significant increase after the boxing match in the experimental group in comparison with control group
P=0.000. Conclusion: Overall, study findings showed that the boxing competition and Mechanical impacts
exerted on the athlete increased inflammatory factors S100-B, CRP and leukocytes immediately after the
boxing match. It appears assessment of these indicators is useful tool for diagnosis of inflammation and
monitoring of brain injuries caused by repetitive punches to head of boxers.
