Abstract
Background and purpose
Improving the state of anabolic hormones in athletes and non-athletes for fitness has been studied by many researchers. Meanwhile, in addition to resistance training, which is an effective method for building muscle, many sports supplements have also entered the market, including HMB which assist with this aim. In the last decade, the use of beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) supplement has been considered for purposes such as improving strength and muscle mass, reducing fat mass and improving performance. HMB is an active metabolite of the essential amino acid leucine, which has anti-catabolic effects. Evidence has shown that HMB inhibits the catabolic effects caused by the use of dexamethasone through the p38/MAPK and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of two training methods, flat pyramid and double pyramid with HMB supplement, on follistatin and myostatin in non-athletes.
Materials and methods
Semi-experimental research, with a pre-test and post-test design, in which the samples were 60 non-athletic men. And randomly in six groups consisted of flat pyramid-supplement (10 people), double pyramid-supplement (10 people), flat pyramid-placebo (10 people), double
pyramid-placebo (10 people), supplement (10 people) and placebo (10 people) were placed. In the flat pyramid pattern, the subjects performed each movement in 7 times after warming up. The double pyramid group also performed the same movements in 8 consecutive times. At the beginning and the end of the study, 10 cc of blood was taken from the cubital vein after 12 hours of fasting in order to check the hormone levels of the subjects, and finally the repeated measurement test was used at the significance level of P<0.05 for the statistical analysis of the results.
Results
The results showed that 12 weeks of flat and double training with supplementation caused a significant increase in follistatin and a significant decrease in myostatin compared to all groups, training groups and the supplement group only compared to the control group. Among the important physiological adaptations that occur after resistance training, we can mention muscle growth and hypertrophy, which occurs following the increase of protein synthesis in the muscle. Conclusion
The use of pyramid resistance training protocols regardless of the type of pyramid, especially in combination with HMB supplementation can improve anabolic hormones and muscle growth. Training and supplementation probably prevented the myostatin-Smad signaling pathway through the increase of follistatin and the effects of pyramid exercises on capillary oxygenation during exercise and contributed to the changes of these variables that led to muscle growth. In addition, training and supplements probably activate the mTOR kinase pathway and thus affect muscle growth.
