Background and Purpose: Considering the role of adipocytokines and glycemic indices in the pathogenesis of obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic diseases, the investigation of effective exercise interventions is of great clinical importance. Comparing the effects of exercise training provides the necessary and valid scientific evidence for selecting the most efficient and effective training pattern in improving inflammatory and metabolic profiles. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of 12 weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and high-intensity functional training (HIFT) on serum levels of adipocytokines (resistin, leptin, and adiponectin) and insulin resistance in overweight middle-aged men.
Materials and Methods: The research method is semi-experimental and applied, which was conducted with a pre-test and post-test design with a control group. Thus, 45 overweight middle-aged men (mean age 38.47 ± 4.67 years and body mass index 27.74 ± 1.51 kg/m2) who met the inclusion criteria and had signed the informed consent form to participate in the present study were selected through simple random sampling and randomly divided into three groups: high-intensity interval training (HIIT), high-intensity functional training (HIFT), and control. The HIIT and HIFT training interventions were performed for 12 weeks with three sessions per week. Blood samples were taken at pre-test and 48 hours after the last training session to measure serum levels of adipocytokines (resistin, leptin, and adiponectin) and insulin resistance. Data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance, analysis of covariance, and Bonferroni post hoc test at a significance level of p≤0.05.
Results: The results showed that serum levels of resistin in HIIT (P=0.010, 4.37%) and HIFT (P=0.0001, 5.23%), and serum levels of leptin in HIIT (P=0.0001, 5.43%) and HIFT (P=0.0001, 5.97%) were significantly decreased. However, serum adiponectin levels were significantly increased in HIIT (P=0.002, 29.64%) and HIFT (P=0.0001, 34.51%). Insulin resistance index decreased significantly in HIIT (P=0.0001, 30.13%) and HIFT (P=0.037, 33.10%). There was a significant difference between the HIIT and HIFT groups and the control group in the above variables (p
